Early Childhood Care & Education - Diploma

The Early Childhood Care and Education diploma program is a sequence of courses designed to prepare graduates for entry-level employment as child care providers. The program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to retrain and upgrade present knowledge and skills. The Head Start Bureau recognizes that program graduates are qualified as classroom teachers for employment with the Head Start and state Pre-kindergarten programs. Completion of the program of study leads to a diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education.

PROGRAM LENGTH
A minimum of 73 credit hours is required for graduation. A full time student can expect to complete the program in 5-6 quarters.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
A graduate may find employment as a child care provider, Head Start and state funded pre-kindergarten teacher, teachers aid in a non Title I school, or in related employment. A criminal background check is required for employment by day care centers and public schools.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
Age:
Applicant must be 16 years or older.
Education: A high school diploma/GED is required.
Program Acceptance/Placement: Applicant must achieve program ready or provisional scores on the ASSET placement test (or submit acceptable SAT/ACT scores.) Applicants who do not attain the minimum scores may take refresher/remedial instruction in order to meet admissions requirements.
