Mentor ConnectionMentor FAQ

1. What is Mentoring?
A partnership between a WGTC student who requests advice and guidance from a WGTC faculty/staff member who can offer resources and possible solutions.

2. What is a mentor?
A WGTC faculty or staff member who volunteers to help students achieve their academic and professional goals.

3. Am I qualified to be a mentor?
There is no experience necessary to participate as a mentor. The Student Academic Success Committee will provide training.

3. What is a Mentee?
A mentee is a WGTC student enrolled in at least three credit hours who volunteers to be assigned
to a WGTC mentor.

4. What does a mentor do?
A mentor will set up a regular meeting schedule with their mentee. Mentors will meet with their
mentee during office hours, communicate by email, or have a phone conversation. Discussion
topics range from academic successes to other challenges. Mentors help guide a mentee through
the WGTC experience.

5. How much time is required to participate in the program?
We recommend that the partnership lasts for at least one quarter. The mentor and mentee should
meet at least once a month which includes in-person, telephone or e-mail. You and your mentee
work together to develop the meeting schedule and expectations for the quarter.

6. If I am unable to continue in the mentor program, will anything negative happen to me?
No. Our program includes a no-fault termination if either mentor or mentee is unable to continue
the mentoring relationship.

7. As a mentor, are there requests that I can deny?
Yes, if a mentee asks you to provide a service that is offered by the college, and it is a service for
which you are not directly responsible, you should not agree to provide that service. Mentors are
not tutors, editors, nor can they negotiate grades with a student's instructor. Mentors and mentees
will be advised of their individual roles during training.

8, What are the benefits of being a mentee?
An opportunity to help a student and support our Core Value of Student Centeredness.

9.  How do I sign up?
If you are interested in becoming a mentee, please contact Kim Crockett, kim.crockett@westgatech.edu, or 706.756.4678 for more information.
