return to top WGTC Holds Annual Mini Camp for Preteen Girls
Posted: June 18, 2013

West Georgia Technical College is once again offering a two day camp for preteen girls teaching the importance of self-esteem as well as cosmetology.

“Thanks to Dr. Sullivan and a concerned parent who suggested we have something to help our young ladies prepare for middle school and because it was such a success last year, the Cosmetology and Esthetician instructors are looking forward to our preteen camp again,” said Gail Conaway West Georgia Technical College Cosmetology Program Chair and Instructor. “We feel like the preteen camp is a contribution the Cosmetology and Esthetician programs can give to the community.”

The camp will discuss issues such as skin care, hair, nails, makeup, dress and self- esteem for preteen girls. Special guest lecturers from the community will teach the sessions in the camp along with cosmetology students and faculty. In addition to the lectures and salon demonstration, campers will receive a hair style and trim, facials including make-up application, and manicured nails -- all complementary of the students and instructors.

“We have been getting excellent responses about the camp the last few sessions,” said West Georgia Technical College President Dr. Skip Sullivan. “I think the camp is a good opportunity for young girls to visit the College and see what we have to offer.”

The camp will be held June 24 and 25 on each campus from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. The camp is free for participants. Posted: June 10, 2013

The West Georgia Technical College Surgical Technology Program received the 2012 Galaxy Star Program Award.

“West Georgia Technical College is continually striving to improve our quality of education and services,” said West Georgia Technical College President Dr. Skip Sullivan. “This award is another step toward our commitment to excellence.”

The award was given by the Association of Surgical Technologists, a professional organization for surgical technologists and surgical assistants. The Galaxy Star Program is given out to programs each year that are recognized as outstanding surgical technology programs. The award is given to surgical technology programs that are in the top 20 percent of programs throughout the nation. To receive the award, a surgical technology program must have met and/or exceeded the nationally set benchmarks in the areas of certification pass rates, 100 percent enrollment to the Association of Surgical Technologists, and percentage of graduates employed in field or returning to school.

In addition to receiving the award, the West Georgia Technical College Surgical Technology Program received many other benefits. The College’s program was announced at the national conference in New Orleans this past May and will be listed in the Association of Surgical Technologist national journal. The College will also receive a gift certificate from Amazon to use for materials and resources to enhance the surgical technology program.

“This is by far something for us to be proud of,” said Jamey Watson, Surgical Technology Program Director. “We will continue to strive for excellence in providing our community with not simply surgical technologists but outstanding surgical technologists who take pride in their profession as well as their certification.”

return to top WGTC Welcomes New Provost to New Campus

West Georgia Technical College welcomes Peter Ludlow as the new associate provost for the Coweta Campus.

"We are absolutely delighted that Peter is joining us,” said West Georgia Technical College President Dr. Skip Sullivan. “His enthusiasm and passion for educating the workforce is unparalleled. His background and experience is an asset to this College and to the Coweta Campus.”

Ludlow brings over 15 years of experience with the Georgia Department of Labor Newnan Career Center to West Georgia Technical College and is well-known for his work with employers in the community. At the Newnan Career Center, Ludlow started as the Employer Marketing Representative, and then moved up to Supervisor before departing as Manager. Prior to his time with the Department of Labor, he served in the U.S. Army for 20 years.

Ludlow received a B.A. from Saint Leo University and a M.S. from the University of North Florida, but he credits his educational endeavors to his time in a two-year college.

“It was a two-year junior college that gave me a chance to restart my life,” said Ludlow. “My life was changed, because someone took the time and provided some quality guidance. I will take the time and effort to do for others, what someone did for me.”

As associate provost for the Coweta Campus, Ludlow will lead the oversight of the new campus, while engaging the local community and removing the barriers for student success. The new Coweta Campus is set to open this fall with the ribbon cutting ceremony taking place on September 20 at 11 a.m.

Ludlow will officially start at West Georgia Technical College on Monday May 20th and has high hopes for the new campus.

“What I hope to accomplish as the associate provost for our Coweta Campus is to establish WGTC as an internal part of our community -- that we develop programs, services and business relationships that meets the needs and wants of our community.”

West Georgia Technical College, with campuses in Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson and Troup counties and additional class sites in Heard and Meriwether counties, offers over 110 associate degree, diploma and technical certificate programs of study. In addition to the tournament, fishing enthusiasts enjoyed early morning launches, tournament weigh-ins and B.A.S.S. High School Elite Experience which is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet pro anglers, get tips and techniques and tour of the venue.

“Our festival sponsors, especially our premier sponsor West Georgia Technical College and silver sponsor West Georgia Physicians, allowed us to offer a free festival that included many activities for children,” said John Asbell, chairman of the tournament.

return to top WGTC Partners with Greenway
Posted: May 8, 2013

West Georgia Technical College has formed its newest partnership with health IT solutions provider Greenway Medical Technologies, Inc. Carrollton-based Greenway, founded in 1998 and a publicly traded company since early 2012, has teamed up with the College to provide Project Management Professional training classes to the company’s project managers all over the country via interactive distance learning.

“This is a great opportunity for us as a company and for West Georgia Technical College,” said Diane Nivens, Greenway director of training and best practices.

The classes piloted in early April with nine students and include a series of five interactive eight-hour classes held on Saturdays for a total of 40 training hours. At the conclusion of the training, students receive their Project Management Professional (PMP) credential which is the only industry-recognized credential for project managers.

“This training satisfies business needs and meets key development needs for our employees,” said Marlie Johnson, Greenway manager of talent acquisition. “We encourage all of our project managers to participate to improve their effectiveness while increasing their industry credentials.”

In addition to the Project Management training, Greenway has agreed to provide the West Georgia Technical College Health Information Technology Program access to its PrimeSUITE software. The software will provide students with additional hands-on experience and the opportunity to train on job functions available in a traditional healthcare setting.

“Greenway Medical has continued to go above and beyond in its efforts to support the Health Information Technology Program at West Georgia Technical College,” said Melvin Seale, West Georgia Technical College Health Information Technology Program Director. “With Greenway’s continued support, I definitely believe that we can transform every Health Information Technology student from a learner to a thinker!”

Greenway’s software has not been the only contribution to the College. The company has also allowed Health Information Technology students to visit a health informatics company, served on the Health Information Technology Advisory Committee and provided students with practicum and interview opportunities within the company.

“This is the beginning,” said Dr. Pete Snell, West Georgia Technical College Vice President of Economic Development, “just the beginning of what we all believe will be a great partnership; a business and industry partnership; a workforce development partnership -- for incumbent and future employees.”

West Georgia Technical College, with campuses in Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson and Troup counties and additional class sites in Heard and Meriwether counties, offers over 110 associate degree, diploma and technical certificate programs of study. return to top WGTC Takes Part in Second Annual Beast Feast
Posted: April 18, 2013

West Georgia Technical College will participate in the Second annual Beast Feast held at Midway Church in Villa Rica April 18.

The Beast Feast serves as a way to bring people to church that normally would not attend. Over 1300 people are anticipated to attend this year’s sold out event, double the 650 that attended last year.

“This event has been viral in this community, more so than any other wild game dinner I’ve attended,” said Mike Lee, West Georgia Technical College Board of Directors Chair-Elect and Beast Feast Coordinator.

One reason for all of the buzz surrounding the event is the featured keynote speakers Willie and Korie Robertson from A&E’s hit reality show Duck Dynasty and a performance by the Christian rock band Builders None.

Beast Feast will also include breakout sessions for dog training, gun safety led by Saber Team Tactical, food plot led by Whitetail Institute, and fishing led by pro fisherman Waine Pittman.  The event would not be complete without the wild game dinner. The West Georgia Technical College culinary program will be providing the menu of venison, squirrel jambalaya, alligator etouffee, duck, goose and wild hog.

The West Georgia Technical College Foundation will receive a portion of benefits and proceeds of the Beast Feast to be used for GED scholarships. The funds will help offset the cost of the GED test which rose last year from $95 for the five-part test to the current price of $160.

“We are grateful to be a recipient of the proceeds from the Beast Feast,” said West Georgia Technical College President Dr. Skip Sullivan. “Adult Education is one of the most important programs we offer and we are grateful for the support of the community."

“The benefits of the Beast Feast to the community are immense; every time someone gets a GED, it places them in a position to get better educated and enter the workforce and be a productive citizen,” said Lee. “A partnership such as this is unique and powerful.   It shows the broadness of our community.”

West Georgia Technical College, with campuses in Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson and Troup counties and additional class sites in Heard and Meriwether counties, offers over 110 associate degree, diploma and technical certificate programs of study. In February, students from the LaGrange Campus competed in the Student Bee at the West Coast Educator’s Conference in Orlando, Fla. where Rachel Horsley came in third out of 130 participants from programs nationwide.

Students from the Douglas Campus competed in the Georgia Society of Radiologic Technologists competition in North Georgia April 5-7. The students placed third in the student bowl. Both competitions consisted of students being asked questions about radiologic technology that they had to answer in front of an audience, similar to a spelling bee.

“Our students maintain the tradition of excellence in academic and competitive settings,” said West Georgia Technical College President Dr. Skip Sullivan. "I'm proud of them all and congratulate them on a job well done."

In addition to hosting competitions, these organizations help to advance the knowledge of students, educators and professional radiologic technologists.

“Their preparation for this event will help them in studying for the Registry which is the national test they must pass to get their credentials as Radiologic Technologists, “ said Radiologic Technology Department Chair and Instructor John Bailey. “This also demonstrates the excellent caliber of student that we have in the Rad Tech program.”

return to top LaGrange, West Georgia Technical College Announce Agreement
Posted: March 28, 2013

A new statewide partnership will make it easier for West Georgia Technical College graduates to enter LaGrange College with a transfer of credit hours. The articulation agreement between the Georgia Independent College Association and the Technical College System of Georgia was signed last month in a state capitol ceremony hosted by Gov. Nathan Deal.

Labeled an “unprecedented public-private partnership,” the agreement is believed to be one of only a few such credit transfer and admission acceptance arrangements in the nation. Planners say it aims to facilitate college completion throughout Georgia and empower the future workforce.

“At LaGrange College, we’re pleased to have an agreement that helps spell out a clear partnership between us and the technical college system,” said Provost Dr. David Garrison. “The ability to transfer select coursework will benefit both currently enrolled and prospective students.”

West Georgia Technical College President Dr. Skip Sullivan agrees.

“This articulation agreement for general education courses between our institution and LaGrange College creates added pathways for our students, and will help them pursue their individual career goals. It’s another step in our state’s effort to provide a seamless educational progression for all Georgians.”

Under the agreement, a West Georgia Technical College student having a minimum 2.5 GPA for all academic work attempted and an Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Science degree will be admitted to LaGrange College. Students can be denied admission only if coursework beyond the two-year degree falls below minimum admission standards or applicants are not in good standing.

Admission to LaGrange does not guarantee admission to specific majors or programs. Students must meet minimum admission requirements specific to select majors or programs to be considered for admission into them. Those who have not completed prerequisites for admission to specific majors will be required to complete the prerequisites at LaGrange College.

Beyond LaGrange, the covenant applies to 18 other private colleges aligned with the Georgia Independent College Association: Andrew College, Berry College, Brenau University, Brewton-Parker College, Covenant College, Emmanuel College, Georgia Military College, Mercer University, Paine College, Piedmont College, Point University, Reinhardt University, Shorter University, Thomas University, Toccoa-Falls College, Truett McConnell College, Wesleyan College and Young Harris College.

The agreement includes all of the Technical College System’s 25 institutions located throughout Georgia.

return to top WGTC Launches Third Annual Art Exhibit
Posted: March 28, 2013

West Georgia Technical College kicked off its third annual traveling Art Exhibit at the Carroll Campus in conjunction with the unveiling of the 2013 issue of VOICES creative arts magazine. The exhibit, which concludes on the Murphy Campus April 17, highlights creative individuals and their work that are part of the West Georgia Technical College community.

“I commend our students, faculty, and staff for their hard work,” said West Georgia Technical College President Dr. Skip Sullivan. “The quality of work presented is excellent and I sincerely appreciate what they do to make WGTC stand apart.”

This year, 197 art exhibit submissions were accepted from current students, recent graduates, current and retired faculty and staff, members of West Georgia Technical College's various boards and advisory committees. Submissions were accepted in the mediums of paintings, drawings, metalwork, sculpture, photography, mixed media and other forms of visual art. Submissions were judged by two West Georgia area artists who chose 20 Showcase winners and 10 Merit Award Winners. Student winners received cash awards as well as recognition at the receptions held at each campus.

“We were pleased that we had a great group of student submissions overall and all campuses had submissions,” said Dr. Judy Jackson, English instructor and chairman of the art exhibit.

As in past years, the stories behind the artwork are just as intriguing as the art itself. Roy Brown, a second semester network specialist student who attends the Douglas Campus, created a digital photography collage inspired by an English class essay about being in the military as well as things that reminded him of home.

“There pictures of my family vacations and pictures of my deployments in Iraq, Kuwait and Egypt,” said Brown. “It looks like a flag but you get up close and see how personal it is.”

Amber Bizarro, a first semester registered nursing student who attends the Carroll Campus, discovered she had a hidden talent in painting after a divorce and the need to inexpensively decorate her walls.

“Art is something I’ve always enjoyed since I was little,” said Bizarro. “Painting is something I absolutely love and I will continue to do it.”

West Georgia Technical College, with campuses in Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson and Troup counties and additional class sites in Heard and Meriwether counties, offers over 110 associate degree, diploma and technical certificate programs of study. “I am always blown away by the talent and creativity shown by our students, faculty and staff here at West Georgia Technical College,” said President Dr. Skip Sullivan. “A great deal of time and dedication goes into the magazine and artwork. I commend everyone who participated.”

Prizes were awarded to first, second and third place winners in the categories of poetry, art and prose. Douglas Campus Networking Specialist student Roy Brown read his first place poem, “New Chair” while the second place poetry winner, Rachelle Shepard’s poem, “A House of Dying Mothers,” was also read. The readings concluded with Murphy Campus student Laura Wheeles’ third place poem, “Ode to Carbohydrates.”

“The objective of VOICES magazine and activities such as the art exhibit is to demonstrate that technical college students, faculty and staff are just as creative and artistic as those at liberal arts institutions,” said Kyle Taylor, English instructor and Editor-in-Chief of VOICES. “WGTC is on the cutting edge of this demonstration of creative talent, and we believe that our students, faculty and staff deserve the opportunity to showcase that creativity.”

Each year, the Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) Award recognizes the educational achievement and outstanding leadership skills demonstrated by students who are in the process of studying for or have earned their GED® credential. TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson congratulated Middle Georgia Technical College student and 2013 adult education student of the year Stephanie Garcia along with all of her fellow EAGLE students on their achievements and thanked them for being influential role models for the more than 1.2 million adults in Georgia who are still without their high school diploma.

“The recognition that you have earned goes far beyond today and any award that you may hold in your hands,” said Jackson. “Each of you has a wonderful story to share of how education has changed your life and opened the doors of opportunity. From this day forward, people in your community and throughout our state will look to you for the inspiration to overcome life’s obstacles and work to earn their GED.”

“Adult education has provided me with experiences I wouldn’t have had and has given me an outlet to help my community,” said Creech who attended classes in Hogansville before receiving her GED this past fall. “It has given me a second chance in life.”

return to top Technical and Independent Colleges Agree to Credit Hour Transfer, Acceptance
Posted: February 22, 2013

The Georgia Independent College Association and the Technical College System of Georgia have made it easier for technical college graduates to enter many four-year private colleges in Georgia with transfer of credit hours. Representatives of the two organizations signed the Transfer Articulation Agreement in a State Capitol ceremony hosted by Governor Nathan Deal at 10 am today in the north wing.

The purpose of this unprecedented public-private partnership is to facilitate college completion throughout Georgia and empower the future workforce,” GICA President Dr. Susanna Baxter said.

“This agreement formally recognizes that Georgia’s technical and private colleges are active educational partners in providing educational opportunities for currently enrolled and prospective students of both college sectors. Agreement to this partnership requires a commitment by all to facilitate a student’s ability to transfer select coursework without jeopardizing the intended mission and stated goals of any participating entity,” Baxter said.

Based on a recent survey of other state higher education systems, the agreement is believed to be one of only a few such credit transfer and admission acceptance arrangements in the nation.

“The articulation agreement for general education courses between the GICA and the TCSG creates additional education pathways for our students, and it’s another big step in our state’s effort to provide seamless educational ladders for all Georgians.  Collaborations like this allow us to open greater opportunities for students to pursue their dreams of career advancement through steady and continuous education,” TCSG Executive Director for Academic Affairs Joe Dan Banker said.

Under the agreement, a TCSG student having a minimum 2.5 GPA for all academic work attempted at a SACS-accredited TCSG institution and an Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Science degree from a TCSG institution will be admitted to participating GICA member baccalaureate degree-granting institutions. GICA member baccalaureate degree-granting institutions may deny admission only if coursework beyond the two-year degree falls below minimum admission standards or applicants are not in good standing.

Admission to the GICA participating institution does not guarantee admission to specific majors or programs.  Students must meet minimum admission requirements specific to select majors or programs to be considered for admission into such majors or programs.  Students who have not completed pre-requisites for admission to specific majors will be required to complete the pre-requisites at the transferring GICA institution.

Members of GICA participating in the agreement include the following: Andrew College, Berry College, Brenau University, Brewton-Parker College, Covenant College, Emmanuel College, Georgia Military College, LaGrange College, Mercer University, Paine College, Piedmont College, Point University, Reinhardt University, Shorter University, Thomas University, Toccoa-Falls College, Truett McConnell College, Wesleyan College and Young Harris College.

The Technical College System includes 25 institutions located throughout Georgia.

return to top Montgomery Gentry to Perform at 2013 Black Tie & Boots

Dust off your cowboy boots August 10 for West Georgia Technical College’s annual fundraiser Black Tie & Boots featuring Montgomery Gentry.

“We are excited to have Montgomery Gentry as this year’s Black Tie & Boots headliner,” said Dawn Cook, VP of Institutional Advancement. “The community has come to expect this event to be an unforgettable evening and this year will not disappoint!”

The country duo follows the footsteps of Blake Shelton, Josh Turner, Gary Allen, and last year’s performer Little Big Town who all have rocked the stage at the Murphy Campus.

Montgomery Gentry burst into the music scene in 1999 with their single “Hillbilly Shoes.” The Kentucky natives, Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry, went on to produce fourteen Top 10 singles, including five No. 1s, “Something To Be Proud Of,” “If You Ever Stop Loving Me,” Lucky Man,” “Back When I Knew It All” and “Roll With Me.”

Despite the millions of albums sold, the sold-out shows and the scores of awards, Montgomery Gentry remains in touch with its working class roots. “We are blue collar workers and we lived the songs that we sing,” said Gentry. “Because of that, our fans are able to make the connection and when they hear our songs, they know we are singing with passion and we know what we are talking about.”

The concert includes a seated meal at 7 p.m. with the concert beginning at 8 p.m. Attendees are treated to valet parking, a professional photographer, and a walk on the red carpet. Corporate sponsorships which include concert tickets and admission to a ‘meet and greet’ reception with Montgomery Gentry are available for purchase now. A limited number of individual and group tickets will go on sale July 1 at $125 per person or $950 per table.

Though Black Tie & Boots has become one of the most highly anticipated events in West Georgia, its purpose remains the same. In past years, $20,000 in student scholarships was awarded because of Black Tie & Boots and events like it.

“Black Tie & Boots is one of our premier fundraising events of the year,” said Cook. “The proceeds go toward student scholarships, program improvements, facility upgrades and faculty development.”

“The West Georgia Technical College Foundation is committed to supporting the College and its initiatives,” said President Dr. Skip Sullivan. “The support of this event helps to make a difference in the lives of our students, faculty and staff and in our communities.”
