West Georgia Technical College has two students selected to be summer interns for Caliber 1 Construction

VILLA RICA, GA – West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) is proud to announce that two of its students have been selected to be field superintendent interns for Caliber 1 Construction’s ten-week Building My Blueprint summer internship program.

Andrew (AJ) Rogers, a Commercial Construction Management major from Wedowee, AL, and Austin Wisener, a Commercial Construction Management major from Carrollton, GA, were among four interns selected.

Caliber 1 Construction officials said Rogers was brought on because he impressed them during his interview.

“AJ came through our competitive interview process,” said Chris Elliott, CEO of Caliber 1 Construction. “We were impressed with AJ’s professionalism and clarity about his goals for the summer. It’s a testament to how WGTC prepares students for real world experiences.”

Wisener is a returning intern, and Elliott said they are excited for him to come back.

“Austin joined us last fall and did a fantastic job with our project management team, learning the ins and outs of project budgets, schedules, and plans,” Elliott said. “This summer, we decided to bring him back so he could also learn the field responsibilities.”

According to Elliott, what Caliber 1 Construction’s interns walk away with is a clear view of the life of a superintendent and the lifecycle of a project.

“As a field superintendent, our interns are working directly with our experienced, full-time superintendents on active jobsites,” Elliott said. “The superintendents we assign to mentor interns are handpicked — they are professionals who genuinely love pouring into the next generation. On jobsites, they use a tell-show-do approach: explain it, demonstrate it, then let the intern do it.”

When breaking down the entire internship, Elliott said the experience is very immersive.

“Our interns attend company meetings, and client meetings and presentations,” Elliott said. Our team is encouraged to involve them where possible. During the ten-week program, week one is focused on orientation and training, and the final week is all about preparing for a presentation to our executive team on their experience. What happens in between is customized to that student’s interests and goals.”

Elliott said commercial construction is very dynamic, so no two days are alike.

“This summer, our interns will get experience across five active job sites: the Douglasville Senior Center, a Goddard School in Newnan, an EMA Center in Phenix City, Alabama, Bonner Hall at the University of West Georgia, and Callaway Baptist Church in LaGrange,” Elliott said. “Supporting our field superintendents onsite, our interns are doing real work — reading blueprints, attending daily safety huddles, verifying progress against the plans, taking photos, and completing daily logs.”

When going over the selection process, Elliott said Caliber 1 Construction sees this as an opportunity to invest in the next generation of construction leaders.

“This summer was one of our most competitive with more than 180 applicants for four spots,” Elliott said. “We also stay connected with our interns long after they graduate and land their first jobs. We view this summer as just the beginning of a meaningful professional relationship.”
