West Georgia Technical College launches a new apprenticeship program in LaGrange

LAGRANGE, GA – West Georgia Technical College’s (WGTC) career services department has partnered with the College of Manufacturing, Transportation, and Trade and the Dow Jones Printing Plant in LaGrange to launch a new apprenticeship program.

The Dow Jones Printing Plant Apprenticeship is a six-month program beginning in September. It offers hands-on experience designed to immerse students in a modern, high-tech production environment. Students will work directly inside the LaGrange printing plant, gaining real-world exposure to press operations, mechanical and electrical systems, and digital production processes such as pre-press and variable data printing.

“The program provides a unique blend of traditional manufacturing skills and emerging technologies, all supported through mentorship and on-the-job learning,” said Alan Threadgill, Associate Dean of Manufacturing, Transportation, and Trades for WGTC. This program was created to help build a pipeline of skilled talent who are prepared to meet the evolving demands of manufacturing and print operations. Combining hands-on training with real-world experience helps position students for long-term success.”

For the initial launch, Dow Jones will select one student who is curious, motivated, and interested in manufacturing or technical careers.

“The advice that I would provide to students is research the company and the requirements of the apprenticeship,” said Zelma Jones, Career and Student Support Services Director for WGTC. “Also, they need to ensure that they will be able to fit those requirements into their personal and educational schedules, as well as their goals.”

Threadgill said the apprenticeship represents a tremendous opportunity for students.

“This connects them directly with a global organization and allows them to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to a real production setting,” Threadgill said. “Students gain not only technical skills but also confidence, professional experience, and a clearer pathway into high-demand careers.”

When it comes time to measure the success of the program, Threadgill said there are several factors that they have to take into account.

“Success will be measured by the student’s growth, feedback from Dow Jones mentors, and the partnership’s strength and expansion over time,” Threadgill said “The goal is to create a sustainable model that continues to benefit future students.”

Threadgill said he sees the apprenticeship as the first step in a broader partnership.

“Our goal is to expand into additional opportunities in the future,” Threadgill said. “This includes internships and pathways in areas such as business, marketing, and accounting, so that more students across disciplines can benefit from industry-connected experiences.”

The apprenticeship offers wages of $20–$22 per hour, based on skill level.
