Eligibility for Accessibility Services

Eligibility for Accessibility Services

To establish eligibility for services, a student must:

    1. Students seeking classroom accommodations must disclose a disability by contacting the Accessibility Services office or complete the Accessibility Services Application form which is available on the Accessibility Services webpage. Interested students are encouraged to contact the office prior to the start of a semester or as early as possible to start the eligibility determination process because services are not retroactive. Classroom accommodations are only active when all of the requirements mentioned in step 4 are met.
    2. Provide the Accessibility Services office with supporting documentation in accordance to the Criteria of Documentation requirements to verify one’s disability and which includes recommended classroom accommodations and specifies that the student has a disability in accordance to the 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the American With Disabilities Act (ADA). The required documentation can be emailed to accessibilityservices@westgatech.edu or presented in person to the Accessibility Services staff.
    3. Upon receipt of the supporting documentation, the Accessibility Services office will review it to determine if and what reasonable classroom accommodations the student is eligible to receive. Recommended accommodations by a credentialed professional or prior approval by another institution, do not automatically constitute a reasonable accommodation. Students can expect for their eligibility for services to be communicated to them no later than 7 business days of receiving the appropriate documentation. If additional documentation is needed, this is communicated within the aforementioned time-frame.
    4. Following the approved determination of services, the Accessibility Services office will contact the student to arrange an Accessibility Services Intake Interview. The interview process requires signed completion of certain forms. An Accommodation Letter will not be completed (accommodations are not implemented) until all forms are signed by the student and returned to the Accessibility Services office. Some forms are specific to a classroom accommodation or disability type
    5. Temporary (provisional) services are provided on a case-by-case basis and will last for one semester
    6. Determination of facility adjustments are discussed individually with the VP of facilities and the Accessibility Services Office
