Academic Resource Center

Academic Resource Center

As part of the Achieving the Dream (ATD) initiative for West Georgia Technical College, our focus is enhancing student support services for students. We want to provide these services to students “where they are” and “when they are available”. Student surveys and focus groups have shown that the libraries are already popular locations to provide needed assistance and help services through available library resources, online proctoring and helpful informational guidance. With this structure already in place, it was a natural fit for the libraries to be the locations of the Academic Resource Centers (ARCs).

As mentioned, the ARC concept was developed as an initiative for the ATD program. The first ARC opening was in the Murphy Campus Library in Spring 2016 and required facility renovations and acquisition of new computers, furnishings and technological equipment. When completed, the ARC provided a full-time advisement center, computer lab, tutoring lab with audio\video multi-campus capability and a multi-functional meeting\conference room. Technology upgrades also included the implementation of Qless line queuing technology allowing virtual line waiting technology from any smart phone. With the success of the Murphy ARC, we implemented an ARC location in the Coweta Campus Library in Spring 2017. This center includes the same features as the Murphy location and also houses a second adviser office, a student phone charging station, a computer Mac lab, tutoring area and meeting space.

As you can see, we are truly satisfying our goal of providing enhanced and high-demand services to students in a centralized and convenient location. As we continue with our progress, we plan to expand collaboratively providing services that are inclusive of every facet of the institution with the goal of enhancing matriculation, retention and graduation through by linking academic advising, financial aid, admissions and the library within the ARC. By combining these services in one location, students are given the academic support they need for academic success.
